Second Life Teen Grid to Merge with Main Grid?

21 01 2009

Another major concern has come to my attention today as news of a future merge between main and teen grids is discussed for Second Life.

Is this a safe thing to do? I think it really puts young teens at risk! Adults have enjoyed their peace of mind as well, knowing the freedom to flirt and play is not at risk.

Educators and parents should be allowed to join thier teens on the teen grid, but teens should NOT be allowed in the adult grid. It puts them and the adults at risk by allowing teens to become easier access for pedofiles, and adults could be prosecuted if they unknowingly flirt with a minor who pretends to be older.

If Linden Labs wants to avoid massive legal lawsuits from angry parents they will not merge grids, thats my opinion for what it is worth.

This is the specific part as quoted from a recent Metanomics interview with Phillip Rosedale. Read the entire intrview at; http://www.metanomics.net/archive011909

“ROBERT BLOOMFIELD: Okay. This hour just totally flies by. We have time for one more question. This one comes from Daniel Voyager, who actually was a resident of the Teen Grid, but is no longer a teen and is too old to be in that grid. He has shifted over now to the main Second Life grid. Daniel, welcome to Second Life. His question is, well, it’s more of a comment: Linden Lab doesn’t seem to be doing anything these days for the Teen Grid or stop signups outside the U.S., not doing resident events or advertising the Teen Grid effectively. So what are your plans with the Teen Grid at this point?

PHILIP ROSEDALE: Generally, I think that the future of Second Life needs to be one where people of all ages can use Second Life together, and that’s the direction that we’re taking in our planning and our work. I think that the educational opportunities for Second Life are so great for all ages that we need to make it as available as we possibly can to people. If you look at what we’ve done with the Teen Grid, I think we’ve done a good job, as a small company, of being inclusive and creating an environment in which teenagers were able to use Second Life, I think, perhaps earlier than, I don’t know, we might have been able to. We pushed hard to get that working.

But, if you look at the problems with having a teenaged area, which is itself so isolated from the rest of the World, they’re substantial. There’s an inability for educators to easily interact with people in there because we’ve made it an exclusively teen only area. Parents can’t join their kids in Second Life so problems like that are ones that we think are pretty fundamental and need to be fixed. We need to stop creating isolated areas that are age specific and, instead, look at how we can make the overall experience appropriately safe and controlled for everybody. So that’s the general direction that we’re taking there.

ROBERT BLOOMFIELD: Do you expect any official action or public notice on this anytime soon? And is the idea am I hearing you right that it would basically be to allow people of any age to come into at least some parts of Second Life? Is that what I’m hearing?

PHILIP ROSEDALE: Definitely. From my perspective, our long term strategy is that but I won’t make any specific “this is what’s coming next and that’s where you can expect it,” in that regard. We’re still working on how to do that and what to do next.  “

A day of Second Life History! Linden Labs Merges with XSL & OnRez!

21 01 2009

This morning was not so different than others at first, woke up, grabbed coffee, plugged into Second Life. My partner Delena Paine contacts me in total disbelief “XstreetSL is now part of Second Life!” she said. I looked in my email, there was a notice proclaiming the same, a merger, and they got OnRez too. DREAD AND FEAR filled me as I wondered what might happen to the exchange rates and sent out a shocked twitter from CatNight to the world.

I really can not believe it and its hard to say if this will be good or bad. I see now that my faith in Linden Labs has truly dropped over time and I do not like it one bit. It’s no secret the Lindens are happy to suspend account’s for saying the wrong things in forums they control. I always loved XStreet’s forums now I fear that my freedom of speech there is a condemned thing. I’m tired of the tip-toeing around every word I say just in case I tick someone off at LL.

Sometimes people just need to be frustrated and get things off thier chest. Condemning rants and utter rudeness I get, but even a frustrated statement such as “Grr I hate Lindens.” can get your butt in trouble on the normal forums.

I’m a huge fan of Second Life, meeting Phillip Rosedale was one of the highlights of my year at SLCC last year. So I hate this sinking feeling I am now getting about the direction and purpose of Second Life’s management and interference in good systems like XSL.

I do not blame them for selling, I hope they all made good money because the whole team at xstreet deserves it 100%.

I just hope it did not kill the future for the rest of us.

AlleyCat Studios Gets A New Home

3 01 2009

AlleyCat Studios, a clothing, pre-fab, costume, and weapons retailer in Second Life will now have a new home on a full estate island. This move has been long anticipated.

For a short time the store will be unavailable while we renovate the new Sim. Currently the name of the Sim is Royally Screwed (LOL) , we did not name it that and plan to change the name shortly to another name to be announced shortly.

The new sim will feature a modern to futuristic city theme with beautiful tall skyscrapers of steel and glass, softened by wide stone roads and lovely landscaping.

One of our nicest new features is a large event area perfect for weddings, parties, classes, or other events. We will be renting out this space to interested clients and will have information posted on rates soon.

The event area features an amphitheatre sitting on the water surrounded by water Lilly’s and floating candles. A screen can be used for lectures or event information, or the screen and podium can be hidden.

The theatre seats 53 guests. Behind the outdoor theatre area is a marble platform, graced by elegant pillars and a large central fountain. This area is perfect for a reception or meeting area.

We will also have six business or private studio towers available for rent. The full building will be available for use to the renter and includes a built in teleportation system and spacious suites.

Each business will have thier logo at the central teleport location with a direct teleport to thier store or studio available to thier customers. As an added benefit all of those who rent a tower will have thier business information included in professional advertising for the city! Plus 50% discounts will be offered for use of the event area.

In all it is an exciting time for Delena Paine and I, and we hope you will come to visit us at our new location soon. More surprises are in store for 2009.

Openspace Pricing and Policy Changes – Prices To Rise

28 10 2008

As reported in the Official Blog:

“Beginning 1st January 2009

We will increase the monthly maintenance fee from USD$75 to USD$125 per month. This price increase will apply to all owners of Openspaces on January 1st as well as new purchases after that date. There will be no grandfathering of Openspace maintenance pricing.

For anyone owning class 4 Openspaces on January 1st, they will be upgraded to class 5 by end of January, to further improve the experience people have on those regions.

At the same time, we will be increasing the upfront fee for brand new Openspaces from USD$250 to USD$375.

Effective Immediately

We will no longer allow the Owner of an Openspace to be changed to a different resident than the Payor. Initially we will not enforce this change on Openspaces where the Payor and Owner are already different but in those cases the only change allowed will be to set the Owner back to the Payor. This doesn’t affect the parcel level rentals, this is just focussed on the whole region rental of Openspaces.

We will no longer offer an educational or non-profit discount for new Openspaces. As mentioned earlier, this is due to the increased back end resource required for us to support Openspaces in the way that they are now being used. For the small number of Educators that already have Openspaces, we will be contacting you directly to discuss this change.

Next, we will be making changes to the viewer that enable residents to know precisely what type of land or region they are on so that the land market remains as fair and easy to understand as possible. So expect to see changes that much more clearly display to residents whether they are on Linden Mainland or Private Estate, whether it is a Normal region or Openspace and what that means. This will affect various aspects of the Viewer including the inworld Search along with the About Land and Buy Land screens. Making Land easier to understand will benefit everyone, especially new users looking to step onto the property ladder for the first time.

Lastly we will begin to proactively discuss overloaded Openspaces with their owners. This is important because as with abuse of region resources, a heavily overloaded Openspace can adversely affect other Openspaces sharing the same machine which is clearly unfair to residents who are using them responsibly. We have listened to your feedback on this, and agree that we need to make changes to better support our Openspace users by actively working to keep the performance levels as high as possible. We will also provide some detailed guidance about what ‘overuse’ looks like and how to prevent it.

So to recap:

Openspace prices and fees change on the 1st January with no grandfathering.
Class 4 Openspaces will be upgraded to class 5 in January.
Educator discount is no longer available for Openspaces.
No Owner switching for Openspaces unless it’s a full transfer of Payor.
More proactive education by support staff to prevent unfair resource use by Openspace regions.
We’re sure there will be many of you with questions and concerns on the back of this announcement. As previously, there will shortly be a forum created specifically for discussion of these changes so please head over here if you wish to provide feedback. In addition, if you need a more personal dialogue about this post, please contact support as usual. ”

I wish to protest this increase and loss of benefit to non profits and education!

This is a poor time for such a change with so many facing financial difficulties. Many businesses and individuals rely on open spaces currently due to inability to purchase the more expensive mainland or islands. This increase will cause Linden Labs a huge loss of business and the people responsible should seriously re-evaluate this situation.

I encourage others to vote on this issue if they feel the same and I thank the Lindens for thier time and understanding as to why this upsets myself and others.

Thank you.
